Remote team operations

Implementing Remote Work in an IT Organisation

IT organisations have the hardest constraints in a remote transition — on-call, change management, and security posture do not forgive sloppy execution. The path is well understood; the discipline is where most teams fail.

Start with on-call and incident response

Distributed teams can run better on-call than co-located ones, but only if the rotation, escalation, and runbook are written down and tested. If they were fragile onsite, they will fail remotely within a quarter.

Formalise change management

Change reviews that used to happen in a hallway must now happen in writing. A lightweight change record that includes rollback plan and blast radius is the minimum.

Security posture, revisited

  • Assume every endpoint is off-network.
  • Enforce hardware and identity controls, not perimeter controls.
  • Audit access reviews on a stricter cadence, not looser.

Do not remove ceremonies without a replacement

The daily huddle, the sprint review, the retro — they existed for reasons. Replace each with a remote-appropriate equivalent, do not just cancel them.
