How AI Is Changing the Way Companies Hire Customer Support Engineers

AI has changed what a strong customer support engineer looks like. The skill of processing high-volume tier-one tickets alone is less valuable. The skill of designing, tuning, and supervising AI-assisted support flows is more valuable. Hiring loops should reflect that shift.

The role has moved up the stack

AI systems now handle a growing share of repetitive tier-one tickets. What remains for the human support engineer is the harder tier — ambiguous issues, sensitive customer situations, and the design of the AI workflow itself.

What to test for now

  • Judgement — when to escalate, when to hold, when to correct the AI-drafted response.
  • Systems thinking — can the candidate improve the automation, not just work around it?
  • Communication that lands with customers who have already spoken to a bot.

What to weigh less

Sheer ticket-volume experience is less predictive than it used to be. Look for candidates who show curiosity about the workflow behind the ticket queue, not just proficiency inside it.

How the interview loop should change

  1. Add an exercise where the candidate reviews and corrects an AI-drafted response.
  2. Ask candidates to critique an automated triage rule and propose an improvement.
  3. Keep the empathetic-customer conversation — it matters more, not less.
